Published on the occasion of the installation of

Alison Lapper Pregnant on Trafalgar Squares Fourth Plinth in 2006

Marc Quinn's contentious sculpture Alison Lapper Pregnant, was unveiled in Londons Trafalgar Square on 15 September, 2005. The fourth plinth site is one of the most significant public art spaces in the United Kingdom. Quinn's thirteen ton, 3.5 metre high, white marble portrait of disabled artist Alison Lapper when she was eight months pregnant, caused a furore, from public and critical acclaim, to tabloid disgust.

This book trace's Quinns inspiration for the work, the casting and the carving of the sculpture, its installation and the diverse reaction. It serves as a lasting document of this seminal work of public art.
